Skittles 13th Birthday Cake!!

A couple of weeks ago a really nice lady ordered a surprise 13th birthday cake for her daughter Jaimee...  The cake was three layers of red velvet with a buttercream filling, covered in white fondant with black, teal, green and purple flowers all over the cake and on top a big sparkly number 13.  The mother told me that her daughters nickname was skittles (she loves skittles) and she asked me if I could make the border around the cake look like skittles to match the flowers.  I made fondant balls and placed them around the cake, then wrote little "S" on them to look like skittles...  I really enjoyed making this cake, I hope to make another one someday, the flowers were so much fun!!  Thanks for looking....

Teal and Brown Cake

Tuesday evening I delivered a cake to the Cheesecake Factory in Roseville, for a really nice ladies 40th Birthday!  A friend of the Birthday girl ordered the cake for her..   They wanted something that looked like a present with a bow on top in the colors of brown, teal and white.  It was a fun cake to make and they loved it.  I should stand inside the doors at the Cheesecake Factory with a cake more often, I think I could get some more business that way : )  The cake was French Vanilla, with raspberry filling, covered in buttercream and then fondant, I attached the bow with white chocolate!!!  Yummy...  Thanks for looking!

California Mission

My son Gavin is in 4th grade this year and I'm sure many of you parents with 4th grader or have had 4th graders know that means "California Mission Project"...  Over Winter break Gavin had to start and finish the model of his Mission (San Luis Obispo de Tolosa), being that he has a Mom who loves to work with Fondant he asked if there was anyway we could make his Mission out of that???  I gave it some thought and we came up with a plan..  First we cut out the shape of the Mission in cardboard, kind of as a template, but also as a backing for the fondant.  Gavin rolled out the fondant and placed the cardboard template over it and then cut out the fondant in the shape.  We then covered each piece of cardboard with the fondant.  For the roof of his Mission we had red brick colored fondant rolled out, then Gavin pressed in a brick pattern into it to make it look more like a tiled type of roof.  Once we were done covering the cardboard we let it dry to the pieces would be firm.  We then attached each piece with pens to hold it together.  Gavin them make some green bushes out of fondant to go in front of the church..  The only thing we have left to add is the three bells..

I know this is normal a cake blog, but I wanted to share how much fun Gavin and I had making his Mission and to show you what other fun things you can make with fondant!  I would guess he will be the only 9 year old with a Mission made out of FONDANT!!  Thanks for looking!!
